Keg In The Closet 2009: Kenny Chesney and Friends WOW Nashville
I bet you're wondering who in their right mind would drive to Nashville, wait for nearly twelve hours, watch a four hour show, and drive back to Knoxville to arrive home at 5 in the morning all back to back? Well, your's truly of course...
Kenny Chesney is a guy that I have been a moderate fan of since the nineties. So I gladly went to Nashville for the chance to see the man that sells out stadiums play for a bar that holds under 500 people.
I arrived in Nashville at 10:15 and took my place behind a few select die hards that came from everywhere from California to Ohio. And I sit. And I burned. And I sit. And I stood. And I sit. And I sit some more. And then just for good measure, I sit some more. At around 8:30, I found myself very close to the stage inside the Exit/In. I thought I was ready for what was about to come my way. Wrong. My aunt Jamie, who is a die hard, had pretty well prepared me, but I still wasn't ready for the show that would start at just before 9:30. Oh yeah, onto the show...
Kenny's band came on and launched into the Beatles classic “Saw Her Standing There,” sung by fiddle and guitar player, Nick. Then “House Is A Rockin'” was sung by lead guitarist, Clayton, which pumped us up as Kenny came onto the stage and launched into his super hit, “She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy.” The fiddle amp wasn't turned up loud enough to hear so it kind of ruined it for me, but “Live Those Songs” redeemed it all. Three more fast songs continued the party vibe and then we relaxed with the more laid back “Got A Little Crazy Last Night.”
Kenny was drinking throughout the entire night and was finally getting buzzed as “Big Star” began and he sang the third verse first. It was quite humorous. “I Go Back” was really cool live and “Anything But Mine” was outstanding.
First of many covers for Kenny was the southern classic “Amie,” in which the guys did a fine job. “Everybody Wants to Go To Heaven” is really fun in a joint like this. David Lee Murphy joined Kenny on the song he co-wrote with, “Living In Fast Forward.” Energy stayed high as “Young” and “Don't Happen Twice” jumped out of the amplifiers and into our ears. Mr. Dust On The Bottle came back on to do one of his songs in the nineties to end an electric set.
Writer Brett James came out to do the song he wrote for Kenny, “You Save Me.” It was nice to hear this one unplugged. New song was next, it will be the next single. I won't spoil it for everybody, but it's gonna be a hit. “When The Sun Goes Down” finished and sent writer Brett James off stage as the band came back on. Time to step up to the big leagues...
Kenny is known to have friends join him onstage when in Nashville. Past guests have included Kix Brooks and Montgomery Gentry. Tonight topped them all.
Here lately, I haven't been listening to country music, but when I do listen, it's usually Brad Paisely, who's new stuff I actually prefer over Chesney's. So imagine the shock on my face when the best picker playing today walked onto the bar stage.
Brad Paisley!!!!! It doesn't matter that his nine month pregnant wife is at home, Brad was there to have fun and launched into his appropriate hit “Alcohol.” Brad stuck around for a lot of songs that included a pair of George Strait covers, an awesome version of Alabama's “Dixieland Delight,” some Gospel songs, and “The Race Is On” by George Jones. It was really cool to see the two top entertainers in country music playing in a bar together. A very drunk Mark Collie came on and did a rowdy version of “Folsom Prison Blues” with the guys that would have without a doubt excited the late Johnny Cash.
Time for some rock songs, Let's see what Mr. Paisley can really do with that guitar.
“Pride and Joy” was sung by lead guitarist, Clayton, and saw solos being traded between him and Brad. The show peaked again as Clayton dove into Van Halen's “Ice Cream Man” that saw Brad Paisley nail the classic rock and roll solo. Brad and Clayton battled back and forth like a couple of guitar heroes as the song ended on a amazing note. With that Brad headed home to his pregnant wife. Thanks for dropping by!
So where do you go from here? Into a a big ole pile of covers. Kenny is very drunk at this point and even left stage to pee as his bodyguard, friend, and fellow writer, Tambo, sang “Blister In The Sun.” Tambo pratically became a member of the band later in the show. “With or Without You” was beautiful and a very nice sing a long. At this point though, the crowd also became a part of the band as we all sang every word to all the covers. Good thing we knew the words too, cause a very drunken Kenny Chesney forgot several lines of the classic rock songs he launched into. “Take It Easy” was great and fell into “Keep You Hands to Yourself.” Kenny introduced the band during this one and I was sure that was it for the night.
Nope, Kenny sensed we wanted more and the beer told him to keep playing. Time for the ultimate bar tune, “Honky Tonk Women.” More Stones, “Jumpin Jack Flash.” Gotta say, they did great on “Honkey Tonk Women” but absolutely butchered “Jumpin Jack Flash.” Kenny warned us it would happen though. After some more modern covers, they went unplugged again to play the full A-Side of The Beatles classic album, “Srgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Well after playing both The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, you can't really go any higher.
Everyone left the stage except for a smashed Kenny and his guitar as he introduced what he described as the most romantic tune ever written. “Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw” was a great cover for Kenny to do onstage by himself with just the Exit/In audience singing along with him.
Well you gotta end with one of your own. Kenny got rid of the guitar and his keyboardist played softly as Chesney and we sang a beautiful version of “There Goes My Life.” It was a nice end to the longest show I had ever been to.
So I exited, said my farewells, and drove back to Knoxville. I arrived home at 4:57 AM. Geez... And the real crazy part is I was perfectly on time to my class at 9:40 AM. I know, I'm very impressive. But not as impressive as the show I just saw. Thank you very much Kenny Chesney for an awesome night. Oh and a special thanks to Brad Paisley for putting it over the top. I imagine I will most likely be seeing Kenny live again sometime in the distant future...

NOTES-I would like to mention the group I sat with all day, they were incredibly nice and I hope they get a chance to read this and get to see the official setlist.--- We started at what would be considered the fifth row and worked our way up to the second, not bad--- This was the second show I have seen at the Exit/In (Matt Nathanson last year), Kenny had amps hanging from the ceiling, I thought either the roof was gonna cave in or get blown away by the sound--- Another guy joined Brad and Kenny before Mark, I have no idea who he was. He was taller and dark haired. Leave a comment and help me out! Who was this guy??!!??!--- Kenny probably drank over a case a beer in addition to the hard liquor he had in his cups---Why didn't David Lee Murphy do "Dust On The Bottle?"--- KC's girlfriend was sidestage watching most of the night--- Clayton can play, but Brad blew me away. He, Keith Urban, and Vince Gill would rock any venue just as hard as any modern rock group--- No Mellencamp, Springsteen, or Tom Petty covers surprisingly--- Many Kenny hits were left out, I think the main ones that shocked me were “How Forever Feel,” and “Back Where I Come From.”---I'm very sunburnt on my legs, arms and face. I look like a raccoon thanks to my sunglasses. Luckily for me, Audrey said she liked raccoons.--- Thank You Jamie!!!
